Mitch McGary and Trey Burke starred in the 78-53 beatdown of the Havoc-less VCU Rams but Tim Hardaway Jr was probably just as vital towards Michigan reaching the Sweet 16. Hardaway Jr. had 14 points but absolutely hounded VCU’s sharpshooter Troy Daniels who nearly went the entire game without making a three. Daniels finished 1 for 9 from deep.
The narrative was how would John Beilein decide to deal with Shaka Smart’s havoc defense. Early on he used the height and versatility of Hardaway Jr. to avoid an early knockout punch to great success.
In the second half it was the Wolverines who were delivering the knockout punches. This was Shaka Smart’s worst defeat in his young career, Michigan was a 3.5 point favorite.
When things were getting out of hand, Hardaway Jr. threw down a sick reverse jam to punctuate a blowout win over VCU. His father Tim Hardaway could be seen looking very impressed.
